Why sailing?
Sailing is the ultimate sport - human ingenuity and skill harnessing the natural environment in sustainable balance.
On a personal level sailing develops our personal and team-work skills. Sailing a single-handed boat increases self-reliance, decision-making and resilience. Sailing a two-handed boat also develops our ability to work in close dependence with another person - one person alone cannot successfully sail a two-handed boat, and increasing team-work skills results in better sailing! Sailing is accessible to most levels of fitness, but sailing well will develop and requirea high level of physical fitness.
Sailing also requires harmony with the natural environment. Learning to sail develops an understanding of weather and wind, navigation and tides and currents. Sailors have an enormous respect for what nature brings - we sail at the whim of nature, and relish our time embracing the gifts of the weather! And sailing boats are the ultimate in renewable transport.
Our fleet
We maintain a fleet of club boats for use by members. This includes:
- Optimists: these are a single-handed junior boat. Most kids will learn to sail in an Opti. We have training Optis, and a few racing Optis for juniors to move up to when their skill increases.
- Mirrors: these are two-handed sailing dinghies with distinct red sails. The ultimate training boat, they are versatile, robust, and can take a mainsail, jib and spinakker. A mirror can be sailed by an adult and child, or two competent teens.
- 420s: a bigger, faster two-handed dinghy.
